Context
In 1998, the song selection also goes through television before reaching the stage. A vote on Domingão do Faustão determines 12 of the 16 songs in the special celebrating Roberto Carlos's 40-year career. The celebration takes place in a Projac studio in Rio de Janeiro.
Roberto welcomes Dominguinhos, Robertinho do Recife, and Erasmo Carlos, while testimonials from artists and other public figures run throughout the program. On a living-room set, Erasmo shares stories about their partnership and songwriting. Memories have their place between the musical numbers, under the direction of Roberto Talma.
Globo airs the program on December 22. The following year, Maria Rita's worsening illness leads to the special's cancellation; she dies in December 1999. The 1998 edition remains in the television archives and returns to the air on the Viva channel in April 2017.
