Why watch

“To see Roberto Carlos return to Viña del Mar after fourteen years, at the festival's thirtieth edition.”

Context

Fourteen years separate Roberto Carlos's debut at Viña del Mar from his return to Quinta Vergara. In February 1989, the festival reaches its thirtieth edition. The Brazilian singer appears on two nights of the program, bringing his romantic songs back to the Chilean stage.

For his second performance, Roberto joins the closing-night program of an edition that also welcomes Shirley Bassey, REO Speedwagon and Olé Olé. Fronting his band, he represents another strand of this international gathering: Brazilian song crossing the border and finding a place on the Latin American circuit.

The Televisión Nacional de Chile broadcast preserves this return as a television record of the festival. After the 1989 performances, Roberto does not return to Quinta Vergara until 2011. Twenty-two years separate those visits: this night belongs to the earlier chapter of his relationship with Viña.
