Context
On May 19, 1997, Fountains of Wayne takes Pinkpop's south stage in Landgraaf. The debut album had hit stores the previous October. The band is in the stage of taking those recordings on the road, before Utopia Parkway and long before the success of Stacy's Mom.
Chris Collingwood handles vocals and guitar, Adam Schlesinger plays bass, Jody Porter fills out the guitars and Brian Young sits behind the drums. Joe Rey opens a run devoted entirely to the debut. Sink to the Bottom and Radiation Vibe come near the end; the latter folds in a passage of Twilight Zone, by Golden Earring.
Two years later, Utopia Parkway expands the catalog; in 2003, Welcome Interstate Managers takes the band to another commercial level. The Pinkpop recording stands as a portrait from before that turn. Preserved in the festival archive, the set gathers ten songs from a group still building its story on a single record.
- Radiation Vibe includes a passage of Twilight Zone, by Golden Earring.
