Context
On August 22, 1999, football meets soul at the Haydock Park racecourse. Simply Red take part in the celebrations of Alex Ferguson's testimonial year, and Ferguson introduces the band. Blue is still the latest record, but Mick Hucknall is already taking songs from the next one to the stage.
A New Flame opens a run of 22 songs that crosses the earlier records without limiting itself to the biggest singles. Infidelity and I Won't Feel Bad share space with Stars and Holding Back the Years. Your Eyes, Thank You and Ain't That a Lot of Love point to the next phase, before the closing Fairground.
In November that year, these new songs land on Love and the Russian Winter, marked by a closer approach to electronics. The Haydock footage, shot for television, takes another path: it gets no commercial VHS or DVD release. The full performance reaches the internet in 2020, preserving this meeting of sporting tribute and musical transition.
- Your Eyes, Thank You and Ain't That a Lot of Love appear before the release of the next album.
