Context
In July 1997, Munich hosts two nights of Michael Jackson at the Olympiastadion. The HIStory World Tour is in its second leg, after a break in which the singer released Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix. That record's title track already has a place in the show.
Jackson opens the musical sequence with Scream and They Don't Care About Us. In the Closet works She Drives Me Wild into its intro. The Jackson 5 medley goes back to his childhood career, while Billie Jean, Thriller and Beat It hold the center. Earth Song leads into the final stretch, closed by HIStory.
After Munich, the tour moves on to Sheffield and Wembley, before ending in South Africa in October. The German performances circulate through television, not through a worldwide DVD release. The recording preserves a stop on Jackson's last solo world tour, between retrospective and recent material.
