“To see Duran Duran at Wembley on the British tour accompanying Greatest, still with Warren Cuccurullo.”
Context
On December 21, 1998, Wembley Arena welcomes a Duran Duran caught between retrospective and continuity. The Greatest compilation had just hit stores, and the British tour turns that stocktaking into a stage show. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Warren Cuccurullo lead the band, with Wes Wehmiller and Joe Travers in the rhythm section.
Planet Earth opens the performance, but the set does not stay stuck on the early singles. Big Bang Generation, Out of My Mind and Electric Barbarella place Medazzaland among Careless Memories, Notorious and Ordinary World. Tessa Niles joins Come Undone. In the encore, Secret Oktober comes before The Reflex; Rio closes the night with Andy Hamilton on saxophone.
The cameras also have a destination outside the arena: the performance is filmed for Japanese television and goes on to circulate in unofficial copies. Instead of a commercial concert release, what remains is a television record of this lineup. The Greatest retrospective sits alongside recent material, without erasing the road traveled during the 1990s.
- Tessa Niles joins Come Undone; Andy Hamilton plays saxophone on the closing Rio.
