Context
On May 19, 1997, Counting Crows reaches Landgraaf with two albums and a change of scale behind it. Mr. Jones had opened the doors; Recovering the Satellites had answered with heavier guitars and lyrics shot through with discomfort about fame. Pinkpop finds the band in that passage.
Adam Duritz leads a six-piece with David Bryson and Dan Vickrey on guitars, Charlie Gillingham on keyboards, Matt Malley on bass and Ben Mize on drums. Recovering the Satellites opens the run. Mercury and Mr. Jones appear in acoustic versions, while Round Here and A Long December link the two phases of the repertoire.
The road continues after the festival. In July, the band begins a joint tour with the Wallflowers, but problems with Duritz's vocal cords cause cancellations. The year still yields recordings in New York. The Landgraaf set remains a TV document of that interval: the second album already shares the stage with the hits that changed everything.
- Mercury and Mr. Jones get acoustic versions.
