Why watch

“To see Roberto Carlos at Teatro Sistina in 1976, eight years after his victory at Sanremo.”

Context

Eight years after the victory of Canzone per te at Sanremo, Roberto Carlos finds another Italian stage in Rome. In 1976, Teatro Sistina welcomes a singer who had already left behind his role as host of the television show Jovem Guarda and solidified his transition to romantic song.

Onstage, Roberto sings in Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish. The shifts between languages connect his Brazilian career with the songs' international reach. The venue matters too: the Sistina's programming makes room for Brazilian artists, including Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, and Gilberto Gil, alongside names from jazz and European song.

The series I Lunedì del Sistina, organized by Franco Fontana since 1969, comes to an end in 1979. Roberto's recording remains a document of this encounter between Brazilian music and Italian theaters. The performance preserves a specific chapter in that exchange: Rome, 1976, with three languages sharing the same stage.
