Context
Thirty years after Got to Be There, Madison Square Garden hosts a celebration split between tribute and reunion. On September 7 and 10, 2001, Michael Jackson brings together guests and his five brothers in New York. The solo career gets a collective frame, with other voices taking center stage.
Billy Gilman sings Ben, Marc Anthony takes on She's Out of My Life and Liza Minnelli performs You Are Not Alone. The selection places these tributes beside Bootylicious and Man in the Mirror. When the Jacksons come on, the focus shifts to family history; afterward, Michael leads the solo set up to You Rock My World.
In November, CBS turns the two nights into a TV special, combining performances instead of preserving a single stage sequence. This selection keeps that meeting between tribute and the honoree's own performance. The recording holds the brothers together again and sets Michael's career in front of artists from different generations.
- Dancing Machine brings The Jacksons and *NSYNC onto the same stage.
