Context
Four days after Heathen reaches American stores, Bowie faces a selection that does not depend on him alone. On June 15, 2002, Sony Music Studios hosts A&E's Live by Request. The format opens room for viewer requests, with fans also present in the audience.
Bowie opens with Fame and moves through Changes, China Girl and Starman without leaving the present out. Slow Burn, Slip Away and 5:15 The Angels Have Gone place Heathen among songs from other decades. Moby calls in to request Sound and Vision: the conversation is also part of the show.
After American television, the road leads to London, where Bowie curates Meltdown and plays on June 29. European festivals and the Area:2 tour with Moby follow. The recording stays tied to television: A&E schedules reruns that same month, extending this meeting between new release and memory.
- Moby requests Sound and Vision by phone.
