Context
In July 2002, David Bowie arrives at the Auditorium Stravinski with Heathen freshly released. The album marks his reunion with Tony Visconti on a full album after more than two decades. In Montreux, this renewed partnership meets a set that spans the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s without abandoning the present.
Sunday opens the night before Life on Mars? and Ashes to Ashes. Bowie alternates Slip Away and I Would Be Your Slave with Starman, Stay and Changes. Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard and Mark Plati share the guitars; Gail Ann Dorsey and Sterling Campbell hold the rhythm section, with Mike Garson and Catherine Russell on keyboards.
Ziggy Stardust closes the first encore and this cut, but not the show: the band still returns for ten songs from Low. The meeting between the new work and that experimental past defines the tour. In 2025, the night gets an official 31-track audio release, inside the I Can't Give Everything Away (2002–2016) box set.
