Context
In November 2001, the new record has only a few weeks on the road. Elton John arrives at the Budokan with Songs From The West Coast, an album that revisits references from his 1970s work. The first of two nights in Tokyo places those songs beside the repertoire that came before them.
Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding opens the journey. Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, Bob Birch, John Mahon and Guy Babylon back Elton, who mixes Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes and The Wasteland with old hits. I Want Love and Original Sin keep the recent record at the center of the performance.
The night ends with a solo Candle in the Wind, after two returns for encores. The tour continues through 2002, while the recording gets versions of different lengths, including an NHK BS broadcast. The two-hour edit preserves twenty musical numbers, but not the whole concert.
- Candle in the Wind closes the performance in a solo version.
