“To see Michael Jackson in the first weeks of his first solo tour, on the 1987 Japanese leg.”
Context
In September 1987, Michael Jackson brings a change of scale to Japan: for the first time, a world tour carries only his name. Bad had reached stores weeks earlier. On September 26, Yokohama Stadium hosts this early phase, still shot through with the songs he sang with his brothers.
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' opens the journey. Things I Do for You and This Place Hotel keep the Jacksons close; the Jackson 5 medley reaches further back in time. Off the Wall supplies four songs, while Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller maintain the link to the previous record.
Nippon Television records the performance for Japanese television. After this leg, the tour moves on to Australia and gets a reworked production in 1988, with more room for Bad. Yokohama remains a portrait of the beginning: the name of the new era is on the poster, but the past still holds the center of the stage.
