Context
In July 1996, a stage built for Michael Jackson is still getting its finishing touches when the musicians arrive in Brunei. The engagement celebrates the 50th birthday of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The upcoming HIStory World Tour is close, but this night has its own address and purpose, outside the tour itinerary.
At Jerudong Park, Jackson opens with Jam and moves through different stages of his repertoire. Marva Hicks shares I Just Can't Stop Loving You, while the Jackson 5 medley revives three songs from his childhood career. Jennifer Batten is on guitar. You Are Not Alone and Earth Song bring the recent material into the sequence.
Above the audience, a reserved structure holds the royal family; around the amphitheater, big screens carry the performance to those who enter the park for free. In September, Jackson launches the HIStory World Tour. The Brunei footage circulates in unofficial editions, preserving a one-off meeting of royal celebration and pop spectacle.
- Marva Hicks shares the vocals on I Just Can't Stop Loving You.
- Earth Song closes the show in the encore.
