Context
On May 20, 2002, the heat marks the final day of Pinkpop in Landgraaf. Macy Gray reaches the north stage somewhere between the breakthrough of On How Life Is and the looser paths of The Id. The second album, released the previous September, sits at the center of the set.
In a pink top and pink wig, Gray roams the stage while the band keeps the pulse steady. The calmer opening picks up momentum, and the soul edges toward house beats. The singer rouses the crowd, but she does not always follow the musicians' script with precision: spontaneity rubs against discipline.
The finale turns that freedom into a concrete gesture: Gray throws the microphone into the audience. The set is also part of the festival's TV coverage on Nederland 3. The following year, The Trouble with Being Myself opens another stage of her discography; the Landgraaf recording preserves the moment when The Id takes over the open air.
- The farewell ends with the microphone tossed into the crowd.
