Context
On September 22, 2002, Bowie arrives at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in a blue suit and tie. Heathen is already in stores, and the tour brings the new album together with Low. In Berlin, that link gets a 31-song night, with costume changes and a block almost entirely devoted to the 1977 album.
The television selection starts with Cactus and moves through Slip Away, 5:15 The Angels Have Gone and Heathen (The Rays). Heroes shares space with this recent material. Rebel Rebel appears reworked; Survive and Alabama Song also join the tour that night. Bowie introduces the latter with a joke about his old Berlin apartment.
After Berlin, the trip moves on to Paris. The recording reaches German television on Sat.1 in February 2003, cut down to 13 songs. The Low block is left out entirely. The edit concentrates the meeting between Heathen and other phases of his career, closing its selection with Hallo Spaceboy.
- Seven songs from Heathen fill the 13-track television edit.
- Alabama Song brings the set close to the singer's Berlin memories.
