Why watch

“To see the first VH1 Divas held outside New York bring its singers together in Las Vegas.”

Context

On May 23, 2002, VH1 Divas trades New York for Las Vegas for the first time. The MGM Grand hosts the fifth edition of the benefit event tied to the Save the Music Foundation. Céline Dion, Cher, the Dixie Chicks and Shakira share the bill with guests from other paths.

On stage, the pairings cross genre lines. Céline and Anastacia sing AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long; the Dixie Chicks welcome Stevie Nicks on Landslide. Cher performs Believe and Song for the Lonely. Shakira brings Underneath Your Clothes, while Céline also sings material from A New Day Has Come.

Later in 2002, the night comes out on CD and DVD. The release selects part of the broadcast, keeps these pairings and ends its run with a medley associated with Elvis Presley. Mary J. Blige's performances are left out. The commercial release keeps a slice, not the whole event.

Stevie Nicks joins the Dixie Chicks on Landslide.
