Context
In August 2001, James Taylor reaches the Rosemont Theatre with a set that looks in two directions. Fire and Rain and Carolina in My Mind have already spanned decades; On the 4th of July, Whenever You're Ready and Raised Up Family are still waiting for release on record. Two nights provide the material for Pull Over.
Onstage, Taylor shares the space with an eleven-piece band, including four backing vocalists. The acoustic guitar meets Clifford Carter's keyboards, Jimmy Johnson's bass and Russ Kunkel's drums. Horns, saxophones and percussion expand the lineup that backs the singer through his own songs and covers.
The following year, the three new songs land on October Road, ending a five-year gap between studio albums. Pull Over is released on DVD and VHS in November 2002, with a bonus feature on the making of the album. The recording preserves this meeting between established songs and work still under construction.
