Context
In December 2001, Elton John takes a new record to a show built around requests. Songs from the West Coast had ended four years without a studio album unconnected to soundtracks. At CBS Television City, in Los Angeles, that material meets songs that already span decades.
Elton opens with I'm Still Standing and soon introduces I Want Love. Daniel and Rocket Man share space with This Train Don't Stop There Anymore and Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes. Billy Joel and Sting call in by phone. On stage, Nigel Olsson, back in the band since 2000, is on drums.
After the special, Elton resumes the Songs from the West Coast shows, whose tour runs through 2002. The performance remains as an A&E television recording, with fourteen songs and the conversations between them. Its selection preserves the meeting between an established catalog and compositions still finding their place in front of an audience.
- Billy Joel and Sting break up the musical sequence with phone-in appearances.
