“To see Roberto Carlos and Luciano Pavarotti share Beira-Rio in a one-off performance in April 1998.”
Context
On April 4, 1998, Beira-Rio welcomes two singers from different worlds. Roberto Carlos brings Brazilian popular song; Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian operatic repertoire. The meeting in Porto Alegre is a one-off performance, also planned for television, with a religious atmosphere tied to Easter.
Roberto opens the show, and Pavarotti takes the stage after intermission. The Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre accompanies the tenor under the direction of János Ács. Jovens Tardes de Domingo and La donna è mobile share the same program. When the voices come together, they sing Ave Maria and close with 'O sole mio.
The evening draws around 50 thousand people and runs for more than three hours. Recorded by Globo in partnership with RBS, the concert airs on television on April 18, with overall direction by Mário Meirelles. The stadium takes on another scale: the gathering of two audiences also becomes a television memory.
- Ave Maria and 'O sole mio bring the two voices together.
