Context
In November 2000, the Theatro Municipal hosts a history of Rio told through its musical forms. Commissioned by the state government and conceived by Ricardo Cravo Albin, the work brings together Francis Hime and lyricists Geraldo Carneiro and Paulo César Pinheiro. Billy Blanco is in the audience, honored alongside Tom Jobim.
Hime takes the conductor's podium, and the opening brings together all five soloists. Lenine leads the Lundu; Zé Renato tackles the leaps of the Modinha. Leila Pinheiro sings the Choro, Olívia Hime enters for the Samba, and Sérgio Santos shares the Canção Brasileira with Zé Renato. Strings, woodwinds, and percussion take turns at the center of the score.
The performance lives on in CD and DVD releases from Biscoito Fino in 2002. João Paulo Carvalho's editing intercuts the stage with images of the city, extending the tribute beyond the theater. The meeting of popular singing and symphonic writing circulates as a complete work, not a selection of hits.

The evening is dedicated to Tom Jobim and Billy Blanco, authors of another Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro, from 1954; Blanco is in the audience.
The recording marks Biscoito Fino's debut in the DVD format.
