“To see Roberto Carlos sing in Aparecida on the patron saint's feast day in 1999, during Maria Rita's treatment.”
Context
On October 12, 1999, public devotion meets a private concern. Maria Rita, Roberto Carlos's wife, was undergoing cancer treatment. The singer arrives at the Santuário Nacional de Aparecida to take part in the patron saint's celebration and fulfill a vow made the previous year.
Wearing jeans and white sneakers, Roberto walks down the center aisle and sings beside the altar. O Terço and Ave Maria are part of the service, which draws around 50 thousand worshippers. The celebrant asks for prayers for Maria Rita. Upon receiving the statue of the saint, the singer cries and holds it up for those gathered.
His participation extends beyond Mass, with religious songs and a duet with Padre Antônio Maria on Cura Senhor. Two months later, Maria Rita dies at 38. The recording preserves this moment between religious commitment and the public expression of personal pain; this selection brings together the service and the performance afterward.
