“To see Roberto Carlos on the Romântico tour in 1999, the year Maria Rita's illness interrupts the Christmas special.”
Context
In 1999, an offstage concern hangs over the performance: Maria Rita, Roberto Carlos's wife, is battling cancer. At Via Funchal in São Paulo, the singer presents Romântico, a show that was already touring the previous year. The set spans decades without leaving behind the emotional core that gives the tour its name.
Amada Amante opens the sequence of songs, followed by Falando Sério, Detalhes and Outra Vez. Memories of Jovem Guarda surface in Jovens Tardes de Domingo and Medley Velocidade, which weaves together nine titles from Eu Sou Terrível to O Calhambeque. Later, Cavalgada and Eu Te Amo Tanto bring love back to the forefront.
Quando Eu Quero Falar com Deus, Nossa Senhora and Jesus Cristo lead the final stretch toward Amigo. Offstage, the year ends with Maria Rita's death and the cancellation of Globo's Christmas special. This performance remains a record of the tour before the interruption of that television tradition, which only returns in December 2000.
- Medley Velocidade strings together nine songs, from Eu Sou Terrível to O Calhambeque.
