“To see three generations gathered at Madison Square Garden for thirty years since Dylan's debut on Columbia.”
Context
On October 16, 1992, Madison Square Garden hosts a tribute that spans generations. Thirty years after Dylan's debut on Columbia, Johnny Cash and Lou Reed share the bill with Tracy Chapman and members of Pearl Jam. The meeting point is not a band: it is the songs.
John Mellencamp opens with Like a Rolling Stone. Stevie Wonder takes Blowin' in the Wind into his own territory, while Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready take on Masters of War. The celebration also meets friction: Sinéad O'Connor faces boos and answers with War. Later, Dylan shares My Back Pages with five guests.
The night lives on through a record and VHS in 1993. In 2014, the DVD and Blu-ray edition restores the recording in high definition and adds rehearsals, interviews and extra performances. The event becomes more than an anniversary celebration: it preserves different generations contesting, and sharing, the same songbook.
- Sinéad O'Connor answers the boos with Bob Marley's War.
- My Back Pages puts Dylan, McGuinn, Petty, Young, Clapton and Harrison in the same performance.
