Context
In February 1992, Hamburg welcomes Simply Red after Stars has ended the previous year as the UK's best-selling record. The tour had begun in January. At the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle, the band arrives with a new rhythm section: Shaun Ward on bass and Gota Yashiki on drums.
Mick Hucknall opens with Sad Old Red and crosses the group's different phases before reaching the closing Something Got Me Started. Heitor Pereira is on guitar; Fritz McIntyre and Tim Kellett share the keyboards, while Ian Kirkham takes the saxophone. Among the original songs, I Wish gets room as an instrumental.
The tour continues until 1993 and adds up to 131 performances for 1.5 million people. The Hamburg recording reaches VHS and LaserDisc in 1992. In 2005, it returns on DVD with nine extra performances: the edition widens the portrait of a band whose studio success already fills arenas and stadiums.
- I Wish makes room for an instrumental take on Stevie Wonder.
