Tommy Makem was born in Keady, County Armagh, and learned traditional songs from his mother, Sarah Makem, also a folk singer. In 1955, he moved to the United States and began performing with the Clancy brothers, forming the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.
The recording of “The Whistling Gypsy” helped spread his repertoire. After leaving the group, he built a solo career and recorded with his son, Kieran Makem. He died in 2007.
