Latest album at the timeRough and Rowdy Ways2020Rough and Rowdy Ways is Bob Dylan's most recent studio album at the time of the recording.“To see Dylan turn the pandemic break from touring into a film directed by Alma Har’el.”
Context
With the road shut down by the pandemic, Dylan trades the tour stage for a club that does not exist. In May 2021, a studio in Santa Monica hosts the shoot directed by Alma Har’el. The French address in the credits is fiction; the return to the old songs takes cinematic form.
In black and white, masked musicians surround Dylan among smoke, tables and extras. The band on screen mimes recordings prepared earlier, rather than capturing a continuous performance. When I Paint My Masterpiece opens the journey; Queen Jane Approximately, Tombstone Blues and Forever Young pass through settings built for the camera.
The premiere arrives on Veeps on July 18, 2021, as a streaming event. In June 2023, the soundtrack gets a release on record, and the film returns for digital rental and purchase. What looks like a visit to a small club remains a deliberate construction: old songs fill an entirely invented space.
- What Was It You Wanted makes a 1989 exception to the dive into the early decades.

Trivia
The Bon Bon Club in Marseille is fictional: the sets are built in Santa Monica.
The musicians on screen learn to reproduce, note for note, recordings made by another lineup.
What Was It You Wanted, from Oh Mercy, extends the selection of old songs to 1989.
