“To revisit the 1991 Maracanã, the meeting that came twenty-four years before the return to the festival.”
Context
January 1991 puts a-ha at the Maracanã during the second edition of Rock in Rio. The group arrives with East of the Sun, West of the Moon as its recent album, after two shows in Oslo. The Brazilian stadium hosts the band before the European continuation and other South American dates.
Cry Wolf opens a sequence of nineteen songs. Slender Frame, Rolling Thunder, Sycamore Leaves, I Call Your Name and Early Morning bring the program close to the fourth album. Morten Harket, Pål Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen are joined by Jørun Bøgeberg on bass, Per Hillestad on drums and Sigurd Køhn on saxophone in this touring lineup.
Stay on These Roads closes the set after The Living Daylights. The Maracanã stop remains a reference point in the band's relationship with the festival: in 2015, a-ha returns to Rock in Rio, by then at the City of Rock. The 1991 broadcast keeps the earlier meeting, when the trio's international career was still in its first decade.
