Context
In Newport, three summers are enough to change the relationship between Bob Dylan and the festival that welcomes him. Between 1963 and 1965, Murray Lerner's cameras follow workshops, gatherings and evening performances. The journey starts among acoustic guitars and collective voices and arrives at the electric guitar in front of a divided audience.
Joan Baez shares the microphone with Dylan, while Johnny Cash appears singing Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. In 1965, Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Barry Goldberg, Jerome Arnold and Sam Lay enter the frame. Maggie's Farm and Like a Rolling Stone lay the change bare; afterward, Dylan returns alone with an acoustic guitar.
The footage travels through decades before getting this edit in 2007, after part of the material appeared in Festival, from 1967. The DVD gathers more than eighty minutes of previously unreleased footage. Instead of reducing Newport to the electric shock, the film preserves the earlier steps and the acoustic return that closes that performance.
- Joan Baez runs through the film in duets with Dylan and in an impression of the singer.
- The 1965 block moves from the electric band to a solitary return with acoustic guitar.
