Context
On September 29, 1992, Dire Straits' last tour is ten days from its end. The band returns to the Arènes de Nîmes, where it had already recorded in May. Now the French amphitheater hosts another night of the long On Every Street journey, which began the previous year.
Mark Knopfler takes guitar and vocals at the head of nine musicians. Calling Elvis opens the route, while Heavy Fuel and The Bug keep the recent album in rotation. Private Investigations, Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road cross different phases of the band. In the encore, Solid Rock comes before the instrumental close with Wild Theme.
The tour ends on October 9, with no other Dire Straits tour after it. The September performance circulates as a television recording and on VHS copies. Its fate differs from that of the May recordings in Nîmes and Rotterdam, gathered on the official release On the Night in 1993.
