Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, and began recording in Memphis for Sun Records in 1955. Songs such as “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues” established his repertoire of stories about work, faith and life on the margins.
At Folsom Prison, from 1968, and At San Quentin, from 1969, captured prison performances and marked a central phase of his career. After years of lower commercial presence, he reached new audiences in the 1990s with American Recordings, produced by Rick Rubin.
