Context
In April 1980, Dylan takes to the stages of Toronto and Buffalo the change that had divided his listeners. Slow Train Coming had put Christian faith at the center of his writing. Now songs from that album share space with the material from Saved, on a tour that trades old hits for songs of devotion.
Dylan sings in front of a band with Fred Tackett, Tim Drummond and Jim Keltner, backed by the keyboards of Spooner Oldham and Terry Young. The female voices take a decisive part in the ensemble. Solid Rock, Saved and Pressing On lead the selection, while the rehearsal of Abraham, Martin and John brings Dylan and Clydie King together at the piano.
Decades later, Jennifer Lebeau turns these performances into a film that also includes rehearsals and sermons performed by Michael Shannon. The sermons belong to the 2017 construction, not the 1980 stages. Released on DVD in the deluxe edition of Trouble No More, the film gives room back to a phase often reduced to religious controversy.
- Abraham, Martin and John brings Dylan and Clydie King together in a rehearsal duet at the piano.
