“To see Gloria Estefan return to the Miami Arena at the close of the tour that broadens her international presence.”
Context
On October 1, 1988, the homecoming has an arena address and sold-out tickets. Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine arrive in Miami after the international expansion of Let It Loose. The singer's name already sits at the top of the bill, but the band remains a central part of that identity.
Onstage, Hot Summer Nights paves the way for Bad Boy and Surrender. The ballads Can't Stay Away From You and Words Get In The Way share space with the Spanish-language blocks. Further on, 1-2-3, Rhythm Is Gonna Get You and Conga concentrate the hits that took the group beyond Miami.
The performance gets a second life outside the arena. Filmed for a Showtime special, the homecoming reaches the home market in a longer version, released on VHS by CBS in 1989. Homecoming Concert captures this transition: Gloria steps into the foreground without erasing the name of the machine that backs her.
