“To see Bowie's second night at the Tokyo Dome, on the tour billed as a farewell to the big hits.”
Context
In May 1990, Bowie arrives in Japan with a farewell promise: to retire his big hits from the stage. The project temporarily halts the work with Tin Machine and goes with the reissue of his catalog. Tokyo gets two nights; this is the second, on May 16.
At the Tokyo Dome, Bowie sings in front of four instrumentalists, with Adrian Belew on guitar and musical direction. Space Oddity opens the route, which moves through Changes, Ashes to Ashes and Station to Station. Heroes gets a chorus in German, while Pretty Pink Rose brings Belew's own work into the set.
Rock 'n' Roll Suicide closes the 25 songs, before the tour returns to North America and continues until September. The night leaves broadcast recordings, but it does not become an official video release. The footage preserves this meeting between the retrospective and the declared intention to move on.
- Heroes gets a chorus in German; Rock 'n' Roll Suicide closes the show.
