Context
On two hot June nights in 1990, the old Yankee Stadium trades baseball for the Storm Front Tour. Billy Joel takes the Bronx stadium with sold-out tickets on the 22nd and 23rd. The tour had started in December 1989, with major changes in the band behind him.
Storm Front opens the selection, and Take Me Out to the Ballgame keeps the baseball field inside the show. Joel crosses The Downeaster 'Alexa' and We Didn't Start the Fire with Scenes from an Italian Restaurant and New York State of Mind. Liberty DeVitto, Mark Rivera and Crystal Taliefero are in the ensemble.
Shot on 16 mm film, the performances become a television special and a VHS release later in 1990. The tour runs until March 1991. Decades later, the material gets a re-edit, a 4K restoration and a run in theaters: two nights in the Bronx keep yielding new versions.
- Take Me Out to the Ballgame ties the set to the baseball stadium.
