Context
From American clubs to the roof of the Tokyo Dome, the scale changes within a few months. After testing the Big Thing era in small venues at the end of 1988, Duran Duran arrives in Tokyo on February 22, 1989. The stadium has not yet reached its first anniversary.
Simon Le Bon opens with Big Thing and moves on to I Don't Want Your Love. John Taylor and Nick Rhodes share the stage with Warren Cuccurullo and Sterling Campbell, plus additional keyboards, horns and backing vocals. Maximum Big Surprise brings Arcadia and The Power Station together; Palomino keeps room for the new record.
The Japanese stop is part of a tour that continues through Hong Kong, the Philippines and Taiwan. Filmed for local television, the night gets an edit of about ninety minutes and later circulates on unofficial DVDs. Between the recent songs and the closing Rio, the recording keeps a precise snapshot of this lineup.
- Maximum Big Surprise brings Election Day and Some Like It Hot together in the same medley.
