Why watch

“To see Kenny G at Humphrey's in 1989, as the Silhouette era gets its video release.”

Context

In September 1989, Kenny G's saxophone already holds a place on the charts beyond jazz. Silhouette, released the year before, follows Duotones and keeps that path between instrumental music and pop. At Humphrey's in San Diego, this era gets a recording for the home video market.

Sugar Ray Leonard introduces the concert, and Kenny G shares the stage with Robert Damper, John Raymond, Vail Johnson and Bruce Carter. Silhouette, Midnight Motion and Uncle Al carry the first part. The guests shift the focus: Dudley Moore sits at the piano on Brogan, while Michael Bolton sings Don't Make Me Wait for Love.

Songbird and Going Home are also in the film directed by Nigel Dick. It reaches VHS in 1989 and later gets a DVD release, with material on Classics in the Key of G. The album Live combines recordings from San Diego and Seattle; the film preserves the night at Humphrey's and its guest spots.

Dudley Moore plays piano on Brogan; Michael Bolton sings Don't Make Me Wait for Love.
