Context
In 1990, Cher arrives at Jones Beach after returning to the road the previous summer. A break to film Mermaids had separated the first dates from the longer leg of the Heart of Stone Tour. In Wantagh, stage and television meet in a campaign that takes the singer across three continents.
The production brings together a band, dancers and Bob Mackie costumes, with direction by Kenny Ortega. Cher stands at the center of that structure, while the cameras gather material for Prime Time Live. The program combines interviews and rehearsals with a live cut-in during If I Could Turn Back Time, the hit from the album driving the tour.
After the North American leg, the journey moves on to Europe and Australia before ending in Las Vegas. It is the Mirage show that gets a commercial release, separate from this Jones Beach recording. The Wantagh recording remains in circulation among collectors, preserving another side of the production: the original road costumes, before the adaptations for the casino special.
