Context
In November 1988, the celebration of Eric Clapton's 25 years of career reaches Japan. At the Tokyo Dome, on November 2, Mark Knopfler plays guitar as a member of the touring band. Elton John widens the meeting on piano and vocals, in a guest spot that also covers other Japanese dates.
Clapton opens with Crossroads and runs through White Room, I Shot the Sheriff and Wonderful Tonight. Nathan East and Steve Ferrone hold down bass and drums; Alan Clark takes the keyboards. Money for Nothing brings Knopfler's repertoire to the center. Then Elton sings a sequence of his own, from Candle in the Wind to Daniel, and stays on for Clapton songs.
The Japanese run moves on to the Budokan and Osaka. The Tokyo meeting gets another destination: it is filmed and recorded for later broadcast on Japanese television and radio. This recording preserves a specific configuration of the celebration, with two songwriters as guests inside Clapton's band, not just isolated appearances on a night of hits.
- Elton John sings his own repertoire and stays on for Cocaine, Layla and Sunshine of Your Love.
