Context
In April 1988, Supertramp reaches Rome with a question hanging over the set: how to preserve its history without Roger Hodgson. The previous tour had left his songs out. Now some return to the stage, while Free as a Bird, released the year before, represents the phase led by Rick Davies.
At the Palazzo dello Sport, eight musicians carry this passage between eras. Davies shares the stage with John Helliwell, Dougie Thomson and Bob Siebenberg, backed by Mark Hart, Marty Walsh, Brad Cole and Steve Reid. The excerpt opens with Ain't Nobody but Me, passes through It's Alright and ends with Goodbye Stranger.
The route continues to Naples, Milan, Zurich and London. That same year, the tour also yields an album, Live '88, separate from this Rome recording. The Rome footage circulates on bootleg DVD, preserving about 35 minutes of a band bringing its two repertoires back together without reuniting its two former leaders.
