Context
On Christmas Eve 1974, the Hammersmith Odeon welcomes Elton John after an extensive North American run. Caribou and the first Greatest Hits compilation carry that end of the year. In London, the party gets BBC cameras and a simultaneous radio broadcast, taking part of the concert beyond the theater.
At the piano, Elton shares the stage with Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, Ray Cooper and the Muscle Shoals Horns. The cut begins at the end of Grey Seal and passes through Bennie and the Jets, Honky Cat and Your Song. On White Christmas, Rod Stewart and Gary Glitter join the singer.
The night's immediate destination is television: about an hour goes into The Old Grey Whistle Test, presented by Bob Harris. The recording preserves only part of a larger concert. Between the recent catalog and the Christmas send-off, it captures a precise meeting of tour routine and the special format.
- Rod Stewart and Gary Glitter join Elton on White Christmas.
