Context
On May 24, 1972, Karen and Richard Carpenter arrive at Melbourne's Festival Hall between dates in Adelaide and Brisbane. The third album is still the duo's most recent studio release. A Song For You only reaches stores the following month, and Hurting Each Other already has a place on stage.
Karen takes vocals and drums; Richard sings and plays piano and keyboards. Between Love Is Surrender and Ticket to Ride, he takes time to explain the vocal harmonies. The program alternates the Beatles with For All We Know and Superstar, before setting aside a long block for Burt Bacharach's songs.
We've Only Just Begun closes the run preserved by the special, directed by Graeme Arthur and aired by Australia's Seven Network. After Melbourne, the itinerary moves on through Brisbane and Japan. Television keeps this snapshot of the duo on the eve of another album, with hits already won sharing space with their musical references.
