Context
In 1975, the gap between markets weighs on Roy Orbison's career. In the United States, the big hits had been left behind; in the UK, his name still finds room on television. It is within this contrast that BBC Manchester produces a half-hour studio concert.
Orbison opens with Only the Lonely and goes straight into Crying. The program packs in ten songs, brings Blue Bayou close to Running Scared and saves In Dreams for the second half. Candy Man and Mean Woman Blues slot in among the ballads, before It's Over sets up the closing Oh, Pretty Woman.
BBC1 airs the special on July 11 of that year. Decades later, Roy Sings Orbison keeps returning to British schedules, including on BBC Four. The recording preserves a less celebrated stretch of the singer's career: far from the 1980s comeback, but still present in the studios and in British musical memory.
