“To see Queen reach the BBC's Christmas while Bohemian Rhapsody holds the British number one spot.”
Context
On Christmas Eve 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody tops the British chart and Queen returns to the Hammersmith Odeon. The theater was already part of the band's story, including as the opening act for Mott the Hoople. Now, the BBC special takes the quartet to an audience far larger than the hall.
Now I’m Here opens the show, followed by Ogre Battle and White Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody comes in split into a medley with Killer Queen and The March of the Black Queen. Brian May stretches Brighton Rock with his solo; Liar and In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited keep the focus on the first albums.
The broadcast ends before the second encore, leaving part of the night recorded only on audio. Decades later, the multitrack tapes are recovered and restored. A Night at the Odeon reaches commercial formats in November 2015. The film keeps the moment when Queen's recent rise meets the reach of television.
