“For the free Hyde Park concert that celebrates Queen's British breakthrough and ends without the planned encore.”
Context
In September 1976, after the success of A Night at the Opera, Queen prepares a free concert in Hyde Park. The idea is born as a thank-you to the British audience and requires a large-scale operation. The band takes over the park at the close of a short run of UK shows.
The program gathers songs from the first albums and previews You Take My Breath Away, not yet released on an album. Freddie Mercury and Brian May move through the rock and piano blocks in front of a crowd spread across the lawn. The curfew weighs on the ending: the band is not allowed back on stage for the encore.
The full footage does not get the complete airing planned at the time. Excerpts appear on television, in documentaries and in anniversary editions, while copies of the professional recording circulate among collectors. In 2011, You Take My Breath Away is included as a bonus track on A Day at the Races. The free night leaves a fragmented archive, with different fates for its songs.
