Context
On November 28, 1976, the Carpenters' British run reaches the New London Theatre for a TV recording. Karen and Richard bring two songs from A Kind of Hush, released months earlier. The meeting closes the tour of the country with a backing band, an orchestra and room for the instruments.
Karen sings There's a Kind of Hush and I Need to Be in Love, but also takes the drums in the Strike Up the Band segment. Richard leads the passage through Warsaw Concerto on piano. Close to You gets an instrumental treatment in the style of Spike Jones before reappearing in the medley of hits.
The BBC turns the performance into a program and airs it in December of that year. The recording also crosses borders: a 1985 Dutch broadcast remains documented in the Beeld en Geluid archive. Between recent songs and instrumental numbers, television preserves a duo that is not limited to the meeting of voice and piano.
- Karen takes the drums, and Richard plays Warsaw Concerto on piano with orchestral backing.
