Context
In 1977, Dolly Parton crosses a border that is not only geographic. Already established in country, she is looking to widen her audience without abandoning the stories that brought her this far. In Bremen, the Musikladen cameras catch this passage in progress, with New Harvest...First Gathering fresh in stores and room for a studio special.
Dolly opens with Higher and Higher, the Jackie Wilson hit that is also on the new album. Then she puts Jolene, My Tennessee Mountain Home and Coat of Many Colors next to Applejack and Light of a Clear Blue Morning. Backing vocals, keyboards, pedal steel, bass and drums make up the band that backs her in front of the cameras.
The run reaches I Will Always Love You and ends with The Seeker. Later that year, Here You Come Again extends Dolly's pop reach. The Bremen session remains a television record of this change in scale: not a break with country, but an attempt to carry her stories to other stages and audiences.
