Context
On September 11, 2016, a sunny Sunday in London ends with Elton John at the piano in Hyde Park. The Radio 2 festival reaches its sixth edition, after hosting Travis, Gregory Porter, Status Quo and Madness. Elton closes the day with Wonderful Crazy Night still recent.
In a shiny jacket, he opens with The Bitch Is Back and mixes hits with Looking Up and A Good Heart. Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson are in the band, as is Ray Cooper, introduced as a return to the road. Before Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Elton dedicates the song to George Michael.
The final stretch strings together I'm Still Standing, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting and Crocodile Rock. The performance is part of the Wonderful Crazy Night Tour, which runs until 2018, but it also lives on off the road: broadcast by Radio 2 and filmed for BBC iPlayer, it preserves the meeting between the new record and decades of songs.
- Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me is dedicated to George Michael.
