Context
In September 1971, the first British tour takes the Carpenters from the Royal Albert Hall to the BBC studios in Manchester. The day after the London concert, Karen and Richard record their debut on the In Concert series. The third album had already reached American stores and supplies a good share of the songs.
Karen sings and plays drums; Richard takes piano, keyboards and vocals, backed by the road band. Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays share space with And When He Smiles. Doug Strawn takes lead vocals on Sacre Bleu, I Fell in Love With You, while Tony Joe White presents two songs of his own.
The program reaches television on November 6 and remains in the BBC archive, which airs it again as The Carpenters at the BBC. And When He Smiles also finds a place on the compilation As Time Goes By. Between live numbers and segments with pre-recorded audio, the recording preserves the first British visit without hiding its TV construction.
- Tony Joe White presents two of his own songs, and Doug Strawn takes lead vocals on Sacre Bleu.
