Context
It is Christmas Eve 1982, and Elton John closes the Jump Up tour in London. The Hammersmith Odeon hosts the last night of a December run. At the piano, he is reunited with the core of his 1970s band: Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson.
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding opens the journey. Empty Garden brings the tribute to John Lennon to the stage, while Blue Eyes and All Quiet on the Western Front ground the show in Jump Up. Elton's Song and Chloe keep The Fox close by. In the encores, Kiki Dee shares Don't Go Breaking My Heart.
The night also reaches television through BBC2's Old Grey Whistle Test. The finale mixes rock and roll and Christmas, with Jingle Bells inside the closing medley. In 1983, Too Low for Zero follows Jump Up on record. Here, the recording preserves the reunited band alongside a guest tied to its history.
- Jingle Bells runs through the rock and roll medley that closes the night.
